By the third day of the fighting (Sep 11), we were the first to issue an urgent appeal on behalf of the civilians. This was followed and echoed by those of the ICRC and the UN a day or two later. The video now circulating on the internet indicates the desperate situation that prompted MinHRAC to issue that urgent appeal. What most people didnt know at the time was that our appeal was based on frantic phone calls made to us by civilians trapped behind the front line. While Ershad managed to assist a few families escape, it was clear that nothing short of a humanitarian corridor was needed. This was the alert we issued: MinHRAC URGENT APPEAL: We call on all parties to allow a humanitarian corridor and guaranty safe passage for civilians particularly those who are situated in barangays east of the front line (Sta. Catalina, Sta. Barbara, Rio Hondo, Talon-Talon, Mariki) and who are desperately wanting to evacuate to safer grounds. We call on all concerned citizens and civil society organizations to echo this appeal.
