By way of introducing myself: I became a fan of classical music from learning to play the cello in 7th grade orchestra back in 1963-64. I soon wanted to build my own collection of recordings so my parents told me that I could but I would have to buy them with money I had earned myself. I quickly learned that my hard earned $5 would buy me one classical LP or I could go to the thrift store and buy the same music on 78s for 10 cents a record which usually came to 50 or 60 cents. My $5 went much further in building my collection when I spent it on 78s instead of LPs. In addition, lots of libraries and homes were clearing out their 78s in the 1960s and early 70s to replace them with LPs so I was given many 78s free of charge. Ultimately I had a collection of more than 1300 78s- mostly classical but a couple hundred popular or novelty 78s. Soon after I married, I came to realize that I needed to find a new home for my collection because my growing family needed the space. I found a good home for them (except for about 40) at the Sarasota Music Archive in Sarasota, Florida. I still have a great interest in the music and the musicians who recorded back then and in learning more about them. Thank you for allowing me to join this group.
