Byzantine Empire (c. 330 - 1204/ 1261-1453) was full of rich chants and melodies to praise the Ortodox Christian Church. The bizantine chant was sung in Greek or Arabian language (depending on the region) and it had the particularity of the ison. The ison was a slow-moving lower vocal part used to accompany the melody; it was a kind of drone note. Nowadays, some the present Greek music still preserves the tradition of this technique. Listen to this Virgin Mary salutation, sung by Divna Ljubojević. Beautiful!
