WHAT: Media Availability with Muslim Community Leaders Following Meeting with DHS Secretary Johnson WHEN: Thursday, November 13, Noon WHERE: Islamic Center of San Gabriel, 19164 E Walnut Dr N, Rowland Heights, CA 91748 CONTACT: CAIR-LA Communications Coordinator Ojaala Ahmad, 714.778.1847 or oahmad@cair Secretary Johnson is on a three-day visit to California to meet community leaders and state and local law enforcement agencies. Prior to today’s meeting, CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said in a statement: “We welcome Secretary Johnson initiating this meeting with Muslim religious and community leaders to discuss countering violent extremism. We do however have concerns about the program’s adverse impact on the Muslim American community by potentially stigmatizing a religious community that has been a valuable and productive segment of the larger American society. “We are also concerned about the constitutionality of such a program, under which government and law enforcement agencies may seek to determine what constitutes ‘acceptable’ religious beliefs and practices. “Constitutional rights are the cornerstone of our society and must not be suspended for any Americans.” CAIR is Americas largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. - END – CONTACT: CAIR-LA Communications Coordinator Ojaala Ahmad, 714.778.1847 or oahmad@cair; CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper, 202-744-7726, Email: ihooper@cair; CAIR Communications Manager Amina Rubin, 202-341-4171, Email: arubin@cair
