CALENDAR ALERT! CHECK BANNER ON THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 26 All of your professors will be posting grade feedback for you (called Early Warning or Midterm grades) in BANNER from 8:00 AM Monday September 23 to 5:00 PM Thursday September 26. Therefore students should log onto BANNER and check your midterm grade as soon as possible after 5:00 PM on Thursday September 26. Everyone taking Student Success must submit an Early Warning Grade Report to their Student Success instructor. This is an easy task. Simply log onto BANNER and check your “midterm grades.” You should record their early warning grade information on the form provided in Assignment 3.1 on page 91 of the textbook and submit the completed form to your Student Success instructor. You will note that it is called “midterm” rather than “early warning” grade. This is because there is an input field in the BANNER software for midterm grade but another input field (such as “early warning”) cannot be created in that software program. We call it early warning because technically the midterm is not until week 7 of a 15 week semester but your professors are offering this early warning feedback at week 5. It is offered at week 5 so that if your grades are poor, you will have 10 weeks to improve your grades before the end of the semester. If you decide that it will be impossible for you to improve your grade in a course (above an F), then you have the option to withdraw from the course. However, keep in mind that you must withdraw before Oct 9 (the actual midterm date). If you withdraw prior to October 9 you will have a grade of W on your transcript for that course. A grade of W will not lower your GPA (Grade Point Average). However if you wait until after October 9 to withdraw from a course, you must receive a letter grade (A – F) on your transcript; if you are failing, then your grade will be an F. A grade of F will be very detrimental to your GPA. Is follow-up required? If you have any courses with midterm grades of D or F, then you are required to complete the follow-up assignment (Assignment 3.2 beginning on page 92). Basically this means that you will consult with the professor of the class where you are performing poorly and create a plan to improve your grades before the end of the semester. An “Early Warning Grade Follow Up Form” is provided in the textbook (see page 94) to make this assignment easier. Students in a face-to-face Student Success class can simply submit the completed form to the Student Success instructor. In almost every case, improvement is an option. If however you decide that improvement is not possible and that you will definitely earn an F for a course, you may wish to withdraw from the course. If you do decide to withdraw you MUST complete an official course withdrawal form and submit it to the registrar’s office. Do not just stop attending a class because that does not constitute official withdrawal. You must submit a form to the registrar in order to officially withdraw. You will not need to complete Assignment 3.2 if you do not have any courses with a midterm grade lower than C when you complete Assignment 3.1.
