The study day: Archaeological contexts have produced plenty of evidence of production and use of textiles showing that they have been an integrant part of human society for millennia. Textile production, closely linked to the domestic sphere, is a complex procedure that entails technical knowledge from the choice of the fibres, to spinning and weaving. Many objects found in Bronze Age and Early Iron Age domestic contexts bare evidence to this probably daily but nevertheless specialised activity. For this study day centred on textiles, we aim to discuss textile activities in general, in order to understand how textiles were produced and by whom. It will also be an opportunity to take a fresh look at objects from the archaeological record that relate to production and use, as well as the textiles themselves, for example fragments of fabrics found in optimal waterlogged conditions or prints captured in the corrosion layer of metal objects in tombs. In the light of recent discoveries and new work, this meeting seeks to cover all aspects of textile production and use during the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age in a multidisciplinary and international perspective.
