CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR THE AFRICAN CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE PROJECT The Governments of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo, with support from the World Bank, are launching the Regional African Centres of Excellence (ACE) Project for higher education. The objective of the ACE Project is to promote regional specialisation among participating universities within areas that address particular regional development challenges and strengthen the capacities of these universities to deliver high quality training and applied research. The project consists of two components; the first is to build capacity in competitively selected institutions to produce in-demand, high skilled, labour and applied research. The second component will facilitate the regional impact and benefit of the strengthened African Centres of Excellence through talent and labour mobility and higher education services. Grant awards will be made to one lead institution, with collaborating partners, up to a maximum sum of US$8 million per proposal. Lead institutions can submit up to two proposals. Proposals must address specific regional development challenges primarily relying upon the following priority fields: 1. Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) 2. Health Sciences 3. Agricultural Sciences Applicants should note that emphasis is placed on regional partnership and collaboration with the private sector as well as international linkages. Proposals are hereby invited from Nigerian Universities that currently offer graduate and postgraduate (Masters and PhDs) training in the fields that are the focus of the proposal. The documents can also be found on the ‘special projects’ or ‘news’ section of the NUC’s website (nuc.edu.ng) The closing date for submission of proposals from the various countries is September 2, 2013. Therefore, proposals must be submitted to the National Universities Commission latest by 16th August 2013, to enable the National Review and Performance Committee evaluate them before submission to the Association of African Universities (AAU). The final selection of institutions and award of grant is subject to approval by the World Bank Board of Executive Directors. A Stakeholders’ Workshop will be held on Tuesday, 16 July, 2013, at the National Universities Commission. All Vice-Chancellors, Directors of Research and proposed Lead Researchers for the ACE Project of Nigerian Universities are invited to participate.
