CAMPUS LIFE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As the sun shone benignly on that cool harmattan day, behind me, was my very own mother, miles apart as she watched ruefully with eyes flooded with tears. She stood there, lost in thought as glimpses and memories of the life and moment we’d shared together fleeted across her mind. As I walked with much gaiety, I felt the familiar tingle of heady excitement. As I walked, I never knew how much difference those steps would make in my life. With each promising steps, it brought loser than ever my campus voyage and further from the loving clutches of my mother. With the thought of the pleasant fantasy of freedom now a reality, I exclaimed with frenzied delight much to the amusement of others. Snap back to reality, I was apparently overtaken by the pleasant fantasy of the picture perfect campus life, now I have piles of carry – overs to write and G.P.A to revive from death. Observe intently and you would realize that a campus is a place of hustling and bustling. With all these happenings, one should not get entangled in the endless dispute of campus life. Put it behind your heart that your study ranks above all priorities except the “G” constant which is God. After the whole cascade of event of the session; one beautiful thing about being in campus is the “result board experience”. When result is out, the “Philosophic spirit of Aristotle” rest upon large chunk of the students’. It is no more news that student after checking their result, and when their result falls right below their expectation, they will start to philosophize saying things like “education nor be everything” or “Even the billionaires in the world nor gree go school” Regrettably,in campus, I have seen vivid and coherent dreams fiddle away like dust into thin air and charred into ashes by the fury fire of laziness and evil vices of the perpetuator. Evil thrives in campus, fraught with too many dangers, like thieves, runs – girls, exam malpractice and cultism. Places like Ekosodin and BDPA often champion those cause. No doubt whatsoever, the thought of campus life paints a picture of political creativity in our minds. 2nd semester is masked by the ploughing eagerness of“men in need of vote” with gleaming eyes and smiling face graciously obliging and “dormoring” you, saying palliative words and bursting into flames of political creativity, forming catchy phrases, slogans and publicity stunts all in a bid to catch un-suspecting students. Of a truth, campus lire is pretty much like a sweet bitter experience, a bitter experience for you when you got “Aro-ed” while passing though the “walk way of Aro-sism” between Hall 3 and Hall 2, a sour experience because university life is synonymous with STRESS. With pile and pile upon materials/ textbooks to read and tests and Assignments deadline day to beat, most certainly is the fact that you feel like a mouse running on a tread wheel and getting nowhere. A sweet experience to witness when there is a face – off between the Hall 3 boys and Hall 2 girls. The tiny little voices from the girls trying to “out voice”the broad voices from the boys. Or better still, is it the constant bouts of arguments about sport, politics, and entertainment in the common room or from the respective rooms of the halls of residence. In like manner, campus life depicts a life of relationships between students and lecturers. If this is done so much, you’re called a flirt and if not done at all it is called social misfit/unsociable. Therefore, striking a balance is the key thereby ensuring a healthy relationship between all and sundry. Am forever enthralled by the palpable mystery of why students buy /dress to impress people they don’t like. A place where ladies go way over board to get what she wants by rendering “what she has” Hey!!,Not to forget the 2nd Semester kparakpor, shows, fun and flexing. Live to remember the norm of the hall 4 boys’ beans cooking escapades. A school that never sleeps, with night as busy as day. Guys “plying trade” with girls under the Ebelebo tree or lover gutter. Students trying to (Jackophite or Jacki chan) jacking things that maybe interesting or sometimes incomprehensible. The thick putiating atmosphere charged with tension as students recite sentence after sentences probably trying to “cram” a night before the exam. Lest we forget, the heavenly atmosphere various fellowships create on service days and again the fresher welcome and concerts. To say the least, a campus connotes a community of people from divergent walks of life, family background, value, culture, philosophy, motive, differing belief and ideology about life that differ quite considerably from ours. All these are to shape us as a learned individual and to allow us co-habit peacefully in the society. Shortly thereafter, my once bristle of eagerness and enthusiasm that followed me into the university had faded away. From thus far, campus life is like pruning because it is better to be pruned to grow, than cut up to burn. Admittedly, I believe far too important that the parody of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it. Many spend too many times dreaming of the future never realizing that a little of it arrives every day. As we chew the bread of hope, my joy knows no bound because though we may never reach our goal, hope is what will save us from who we once were.
