CAN IT BE SAID THAT POLITICS OF ETHNICITY, RELIGION AND SENTIMENTS - TopicsExpress

CAN IT BE SAID THAT POLITICS OF ETHNICITY, RELIGION AND SENTIMENTS ARE PLAYING OUT IN UNIABUJA? It is no more news that Professor Michael U. Adikwu was on Monday 30th of June 2014 announced as the new Vice Chancellor of our great citadel of learning University of Abuja, Nigeria by the university council. Professor Adikwu, a professor of Pharmacy from the University of Nigeria Nsukka was said to have come third (3rd) among the three (3) candidates that were eventually shortlisted for the position of the universitys Vice Chancellor out of the about 125 professors that initially applied. Professor Umar Danbatta (87% scores) and Professor Abdul Raheem Adebayo Lawal (73% scores) came first and second respectively while Prof Michael Adikwu came third with 64% score. Well, information has it that security reports by the DSS did not favour both Professor Umar and Professor Lawal, while security report on Professor Adikwu was favourable. Hence, his consideration by higher number of members of the university council over his (Professor Michael Adikwu) appointment as the new Vice Chancellor. As a result therefore, some persons have approached the National Industrial court in Abuja to quash the appointment of Professor Adikwu as Vice Chancellor arguing that his appointment ignored merit and that his area of specialization (Pharmacy) is not taught in the university and so on. Dr Raji Rasheed and Dr. Okoli (both SSANU members representing the congregation in the university council), alongside Dr. Muktar Muhammad (of the faculty of law, former Deputy Vice Chancellor - Administration and present Director Academic Planning) are said to have instituted the case against the university at the industrial court. However, and really, everyone would have actually expected that the last shouldnt be the first. It should have been based on merit. But lets please ponder on the following questions: 1. Was Nuhu Yakub (the VC before Adelabu) not also the third on the list of the top three from among which he emerged? 2. Please, can someone also tell me, what position was Professor Adelabu (the immediate past VC) among the top three during the process of his selection as Vc? 3. On what basis did the University of Abuja Councils committee on the selection of VC grade Prof. Dambatta 15% on appearance while Prof. Adikwu was allotted just 2%? 4. On what basis are some perceived fall-out-of-favour king makers agitating for a Muslim VC arguing that the immediate past VC was a Christian? 5. Why would some members of the council abstain from voting in the process of selecting a new VC even when they knew it was crucial for the school to have a new helmsman and move forward? 6. Why would some persons desire to subject uniabuja to persistent self-made crisis just because this is not their alma matta? 7. Why would some persons be angered by the fact that the former Registrar was removed even when it is obvious that he had overstayed his tenure in office? 8. Why would some persons want to pull down the entire uniabuja structure simply because the new VC and the Acting Registrar are both from North Central (Benue and Plateau respectively) and are Christians? Sincerely, this and many more salient issues are to be heavily considered before you pitch your tent. Long Live UniAbuja @Continuum Talk-Talk®
