CANADA WESTCAST INDUSTRIES FINED FOR $ 110,000 AFTER WORKER IN THE PLANT WAS INJURED IN A FALL WHILE OPERATING A SCISSOR LIFT 28TH SEPTEMBER 2013 Ontario’s Ministry of Labour has levied $110,000 in fines against Wescast Industries, after a worker at its Strathroy plant was injured in a fall. On January 11, 2011 the worker was operating a Skyjack scissor lift to do maintenance work on a ventilation system, when the Skyjack tipped over. Investigators determined the Skyjack drove into an opening in a coolant collection trough, causing the machine to tip over. A hearing found that Wescast failed to ensure that the worksite floor was free from the obstruction or hazard of an uncovered opening in the trough, and failed to ensure that a grate for the trough was secured in place. The worker suffered head injuries and a fractured arm. In addition to the $110,000 fine, Wescast was ordered to pay a 25% victim fine surcharge.
