CAPE TOWN – A court battle is underway in the Eastern Cape to stop the retrenchments of dozens of workers at a tyre manufacturing company. Continental Tyres plans to retrench at least 125 workers. Trade union Solidarity approached the courts in a bid to halt the process. Continental Tyres says the plan to retrench workers comes after a month-long crippling strike, which resulted in the company amalgamating its shift system. The company has been criticised by the union for allegedly not following correct procedures. Solidarity’s Johan Kruger says, “Once you start contemplating retrenchments you must start to consult. In this case, this didn’t happen. We are hoping to interdict the process.” ewn.co.za/2014/06/18/Tyre-company-retrenchment-process-unfair?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
