CCTV Glare On Liquor Sale Bhubaneswar : 12/March/2014 In a bid to ensure smooth conduct of polls, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today directed all 42 wine shops in the capital city to install CCTV cameras in their shops. This was decided at BMC preparatory meeting held here today under the chairmanship of BMC Commissioner and Electoral Officer, Krishan Kumar. Addressing media persons after the review meet, Dr.Kumar said, “To avoid use high volume of liquor during the polls, CCTV cameras will be installed in the godowns of all 42 big shops, retailer shops and off shops. The liquor shops have also been asked to close down 48 hours before the day of polling.” The BMC will also appoint nine special squads to look after the ensuing elections in the three Assembly constituencies and a Lok Sabha constituency in the city. Special observers will be deployed to look after election expenses. “If anybody wants to complain anything regarding the election within the BMC limits, they can directly lodge a complaint through 0674-2430530, which will be active from 8 am to 8 pm every day. A unique registration number will be given to complainants, to know the status of their complain,” said the BMC Commissioner. To address the problems of voters, the Voter’s Sahayata Kendra at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and sub-Collector will remain open till March 26. The eligible persons can apply for new registration and transfer of ID cards by March 24. The new voter ID card will be issued on March 25 and 26, said Dr.Kumar. Elections in the city will be held in 597 booths, from which 41 have been identified as sensitive. Besides, for 60 booths which received low turnouts in 2009 elections, the authority has planned to engage some social activists to woo voters. Moreover, to attract disabled, women and youth voters, the BMC has decided to open 50 model polling booths across the city.
