CDC report says 29 million Americans have diabetes, with another 86 million having pre-diabetes and at high risk of developing diabetes...: reut.rs/Sy3rOs. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (or diabetic neuropathy) is the leading cause of neuropathy in the U.S. It is also one of the most common, and earliest, complications of diabetes affecting approximately 60-70% of all diabetics. The relationship between diabetes and peripheral neuropathy is complicated, and is not completely understood. However, we do know that neuropathy can develop in individuals with very minimal diabetes and even in individuals with a pre-diabetic condition called “impaired glucose tolerance.” Preventing diabetic neuropathy requires that we recognize the risk factors and the symptoms and signs, and understand the importance of tight glycemic control.
