CHANCO RE-OPENING TO BE DECIDED TODAY By Silvester Ayuba James University of Malawi Council and administration officials from the currently closed UNIMA constituent colleges are today meeting in Zomba to finally decide the reopening date for the colleges, which is expected to be very soon, Storm has sniffed. The date, although not decided yet, is most likely to be 12th January 2015, our impeccable source has strongly indicated. According to the very highly-placed source, the notice will be very short because all parties already feel concerned with the delay. Speaking to this reporter online this morning, the University Office-based source said a communique would soon after the meeting be released, informing the students of all arrangements thereof. The meeting is starting this morning, and all arrangements that will be agreed will be announced soon after it; but as for the date, it is very likely that 12 January will be unanimously agreed, because almost everyone I talked to, who is attending the meeting, is in favour of it. You will also remember that the closure of the college was purely to do with labour disputes, and once these are settled, as they appear to be at the moment, there would no much logistics to consider that would affect the reopening and immediate commencement of classes, he said. Asked whether the said disputes were indeed settled, the anonymous source confidently said everything looks to be in order, without precisely stating the state of affairs. Recently, it emerged that government through UNIMA Council had offered the academic staff and the support staff a 36% increment, but horns still remained locked between the former and academic stuff on the issue of arrears based on the new salary scale. Storm was unable to gather more information on the then new disagreement, but it became apparent that earlier intentions to reopen the college on the 05th of January (as we had reported) were reportedly frustrated by the same. Meanwhile, an increasingly swelling tumor of boredom and frustration coupled with a surging wave of fury and displeasure has forced Chanco and Polytechnic students union leaders to call for a concerted assembly to toss minds on how to force a possible early reopening of the colleges. The assembly, which will be held at Polytechnic this afternoon at 1pm, is expected to draw mostly Blantyre based student participants from the two colleges. Tired of basking in the tranquil of hopeless peace, the participants are most likely to consider drawing their daggers and gleaming machetes against the authorities that be.
