CHENEY SPEAKS ON ISIS THREAT ...: He spent eight years bending the ear of George W. Bush. On Wednesday, former vice president Dick Cheney sought to advise another US leader, this time over how to contend with violent jihadists. In a Washington speech, Cheney, an architect of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, criticized a disengaged President Barack Obama for his defensive posture in the face of extremist threats, including those posed by the Islamic State (IS). While the president was claiming the tide of war was receding and core Al-Qaeda had been decimated, the threat was actually increasing, Cheney said at the American Enterprise Institute think tank where he received a standing ovation. From Iraq, Syria and Yemen, over to Pakistan, all the way down to Somalia and west to Nigeria -- in various places under various names -- a whole new wave of jihadists was on the rise. Cheney has served four Republican presidents, and while conservatives applaud his hawkish national security positions, he is despised by many Democrats for his role in invading Iraq. ------------------------ THERE IS LITTLE DOUBT ISIS IS A RADICAL ORGANIZATION. THERE IS LITTLE DOUBT ITS INTENT IS TO CREATE AN ISLAMIC CALIPHATE ENCOMPASSING AT LEAST SYRIA AND IRAQ. THERE IS LITTLE DOUBT THAT THEY HAVE GARNERED SUPPORT FROM VARIOUS CORNERS OF THE WORLD. NONE OF THAT IS THE POINT. THE POINT IS: CAN ISIS ACTUALLY CREATE A SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO THE SAFETY OF THE UNITED STATES. MY OPINION IS THEY CANNOT. IN A PREVIOUS POST I SUGGESTED THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION WOULD BE TO USE PIN POINT AIRSTRIKES AND DRONE ATTACKS TO TAKE AWAY ALL THEIR TOYS. HELL! WE SHOULD KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY HAVE. WE GAVE IT TO THEM IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER OVER A DECADE. BY REDUCING THEM TO USING BASEBALL BATS AND KNIVES I DO NOT SEE THEM AS A THREAT TO THE WORLD. AS WITH MANY OTHER ARAB/ISLAM ISSUES A KEY POINT HERE IS TO PREVENT MONEY FROM FLOWING TO THEM AND ARMS FROM FINDING THEIR WAY THERE. THIS IS MUCH EASIER SAID THAN DONE. I THINK VLADIMIR PUTIN HAD IT RIGHT WHEN HE TOLD THE WHOLE WORLD (ESPECIALLY THE ARAB/MUSLIM WORLD), “IF YOU MESS WITH OUR OLYMPICS WE WILL RESPOND WITH NUCLEAR.” THAT WAS A PRETTY CLEAR MESSAGE FROM A LEADER WHO IS NEITHER A LIAR NOR A MARSHMELLOW (OBAMA IS BOTH). THEY UNDERSTOOD THAT MESSAGE. THE OLYMPICS PROCEEDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. WE DO NOT HAVE A LEADER WHO SPEAKS THE TRUTH AND THERE IS NO IRON IN HIS WORDS.
