CHIKUNGUNYA CASES INCREASE Acting Health Minister, Donville Inniss has confirmed that there are now 40 confirmed cases of Chikungunya in Barbados and over 100 other cases under investigation. He says while there have been reports of increases in the number of patients with symptoms seeking medical attention, no deaths have been associated with the virus. He made the comments this afternoon during a tour of SILS DIALYSIS Barbados at the corner of Belleville and Pine Road. The first case of Chikungunya recorded in Barbados was on June 3rd. The person was a visitor who had travelled from another Caribbean country. Minister Inniss also says the Health Ministry is ever mindful of the threat from Ebola, adding that now it has reached the U.S. more red flags are being raised. In this regard hes urging Barbadians not to go into any panic mode, but instead adhere to the protocols relating to communicable diseases that have served the country so well in the past. Meanwhile Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Joy St John says construction of an isolation facility to handle infectious diseases is underway and should be completed soon.
