CITY OF PORTALES TO REBUILD ITS WASTEWATER SYSTEM A Portales - TopicsExpress

CITY OF PORTALES TO REBUILD ITS WASTEWATER SYSTEM A Portales project that has been in the talking and planning stages for most of the last decade will at last become a reality with a $27 million loan from the State of New Mexico. Portales city officials say the money, which breaks down to both $26.5 million in loan funds along with $420,000 in a loan/grant subsidy from the New Mexico Environmental Department, will pay for the building of a new wastewater treatment plant. The money, which is one of the largest loans of its kind, comes especially from the NMED’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund. The wastewater system revamping project will also include the construction of a storage facility and installation of piping. As part of the project, members of the Portales City Council have voted to hire the Albuquerque-based Smith Engineering to do the design of the new plant. As currently planned, the new plant will have a project life of more than 70 years. Construction on the facility is expected to begin in early 2014.
