CNFR: Third Round Hits Midpoint Submitted by OPSU Rodeo Team Casper, Wyo. – The week-long College National Finals Rodeo has hit its midpoint in terms of days, but the competition is heating up as the third round continues. Many cowboys and cowgirls anxiously watch their competitors to see if they will qualify for the coveted short go where the top 12 from each event will compete on Saturday night. Many Oklahoma Panhandle State University athletes are among those. Joe Frost rounded out his week at the timed event end of the arena in the steer wrestling Wednesday night. The all-around talent made a solid 6.8-second run; however it is a little too late for the Utah native. After missing his first steer of the week, Frost will not have a chance at the championship round. The double-duty cowboy is holding strong in the bull riding. With no cowboy riding three bulls so far, Frost is sitting pretty with scores on his first two. He will ride again Thursday night. Also among the top of the average race is Nat Stratton in the saddle bronc riding. At the conclusion of Wednesday night’s performance, Stratton is fifth overall. Teammate Shade Etbauer is currently fifth in the third round of the saddle bronc. Etbauer will compete at the other end of the arena again Friday night during the last performance before the short round. After breaking the barrier in round two, Etbauer will have to be quick in this round of the steer wrestling to keep his short go dreams alive. Sitting on the bubble for the championship round is Caleb Bullock in the calf roping. The sophomore is holding at 10th place in the average. Competing Thursday evening will be Joe Harper in the saddle bronc riding, Logan Glendy in the bareback riding and as mentioned before, Frost will climb aboard his third bull. Orin Larsen, Jeff Bertus and Etbauer will round out the competition on Friday before the final calculations are made to see who makes the top 12 and qualifies for the championship round.
