The Guard then proclaims Caligulas uncle Claudius as Emperor. 1679: King Charles II dissolves the Cavalier Parliament. 1848: James W Marshall finds gold at Sutters Mill near Sacramento, setting off the California Gold Rush of 1849. 1908: The first Boy Scout Troop is organized in England by Robert Baden-Powell. 1916: The US Supreme Court declares a federal income tax constitutional. 1922: The Eskimo Pie is patented. 1924: St Petersburg Russia is renamed Leningrad. 1933: The 20th Amendment to the Constitution is ratified, changing the beginning and ending dates of terms for all elected federal officials. 1935: The first canned beer is sold. 1939: A deadly earthquake hits Chile killing 28,000. 1942: Thailand, under the control of Japan, declares war on the US and the UK. 1943: Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill conclude a meeting about the war at Casablanca. 1947: NFL owners vote to use sudden death overtime in playoff games. 1961: A bomber carrying two H bombs breaks up in mid air over North Carolina. The uranium core of one of the bombs remains missing to this day. 1965: Winston Churchill dies in London at age 90. 1972: Japanese Sgt Shoichi Yokoi is found hiding in a Guam jungle where he had been since the end of World War II. 1978: A Soviet satellite carrying a nuclear reactor on board burns up in the Earths atmosphere and scatters radioactive debris over Canadas Northwest Territories. 1984: After being shown on a Super Bowl ad 2 days earlier, the first Apple Macintosh computer goes on sale. 1986: Voyager 2 passes within 50,000 of Uranus. 1989: Serial killer Ted Bundy is executed in the electric chair in Florida. 1990: Japan launches its first Lunar probe. 1995: Opening statements are given in the OJ Simpson Murder trial. 2003: The US Department of Homeland Security officially begins operations. 2014: Three bombs explode in Cairo Egypt, killing 7 and hurting hundreds.
