COACHING POINT Lets have a look at Arsenals second goal yesterday, from a Goalkeeping perspective. We are always told, Get out and narrow the angle. But, thats NOT always the correct decision. As you can see from this video, the fact that the Goalkeeper is so close to Cazorla, he has created a couple of problems for himself. He has made the decision easy for Cazorla. The only thing he can do, is lift it over him. He hasnt made the Arsenal player work for his goal. The fact that he is so far down the line of the ball, he is too close to Cazorla, meaning little, to no, reaction time. Once the ball is hit, he has no time to react and try make the save. So, what could he have done differently, to increase his chances of saving it? He could have held his position closer to the goal. This way, he has still narrowed the angle to make it difficult for Cazorla, but he has also given himself a few seconds of reaction time to make the save. He would also have given Cazorla a tougher choice on how he was going to score. A little chip would easily have been collected. Therefore, to score from such a tight angle, it would need to be something very special to beat the Goalkeeper. Being a Goalkeeper is tough, minor changes in our decision making can be the difference between 3 points in a game. Thats why its so important to analyse our performance after each game, so we can learn from our decisions and ultimately, grow to become a better Goalkeeper.
