COLONIZING EAST AFRICA: Germans take possesion of a territory in East Africa. Germany declared a protectorate in East Africa in 1885 and established the colony of German East Africa (present-day Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi) in 1891. In 1908, Friedrich von Lindequist, undersecretary in the German colonial office, led a commission to the highlands of German East Africa to study the feasibility of expanded settlement from Germany in the colony.
