COMPETITORS AGAIN UNDER THE WHIP ON FORCE FUEL 450 Competitors will again be under the whip at the Force Fuel 450, round five of this year’s Donaldson Cross Country Championship, at Sun City the popular Pilanesberg resort on August 8 and 9. Crews will start the second half of the season by again venturing into virgin territory. Three other events earlier in the season, the RFS 450 in Harrismith, the Toyota Dealer 450 in Mooi River and the recent Toyota 1000 Desert Race in Jwaneng, also took competitors into the unknown. “We have been granted the privilege by Chief Lebogang Mogale, of Bapong, and Chief Edward Mabalane, of Mabaalstad, to host an event that will be run in typical North West Province conditions,” said route director Adri Roets. “This means thorny bush, overgrown sections and virgin veld make up the most part of the route. “This race has always been a tough one. This year will be no different, and after a dry winter it is going to be very dusty.” Roets added that sections of the route were tight and overgrown, but opened up every now and then. The route also passes close to many villages and will again be spectator friendly. Numerous spectator points are easily accessible from the Sun City complex via tar and gravel roads. “The race has drawn a great deal of interest from local communities,” Roets said, “and although it is within easy proximity of centres like Johannesburg and Pretoria, the area is virtually unknown as a tourist attraction. The local chiefs are hoping the race will change that.” Race headquarters and the designated service park will be located at the Sun City complex, with free public access to these areas and spectator points along the route. There will be a ceremonial start at race headquarters, with the timed start/finish at Bapong village on the outskirts of the resort. The qualifying race to determine start positions will start from race headquarters at 11:30 on Friday, August 8 and the race at 08:00 on Saturday, August 9.
