Friends, A few members became defensive the other day after my post about what is wrong with vegetarianism. If I may share a personal experience. I remember when I came across information about dairy online. I cannot remember where it was, but I remember being horrified and appalled but also grateful that I found out what I was participating in. I do not know what I thought was happening to cows prior to reading this information. I didnt think about it. At the supermarket there were dairy products. I didnt think beyond that. Well not very much. And after I read the information about the dairy industry, I couldnt believe this was allowable, that this could be acceptable under welfare laws. (later I realised welfare laws had nothing to do with animals or justice and everything to do with profits) But I became vegan immediately after reading that information about dairy, because I realised that all animal products (and all animal use) would be the result of some kind of harm and deprivation of rights and that if I believed that animal exploitation was truly wrong, then I had to reject it all. I also couldnt in all good conscience promote welfare because welfare is horrible, its unethical and if applied to humans it would be viewed as torture. It also does little to nothing for animals and to endorse it is to reinforce the idea that using animals as resources is morally acceptable as long as it is humane. So I couldnt in good conscience go down that path. I just had to reject it all. Then a couple of years after becoming vegan, I came across abolitionist veganism online which helped me formulate in a clearer way what I was already moving toward. I am hoping that some of the information provided here will reach someone they way the information I came across accidentally, reached me. LiveVegan
