CONSERVATION COMMENTS FROM THE HAND COUNTY CONSERVATION DISTRICT It may seem early but now while the deciduous trees have leaves is the time to be checking for replacements for next spring. It is much easier to tell if a tree is dead now than in the fall after the leaves have all fallen off. Also, while you are out, check the fabric to make sure it isn’t girdling any trees. You don’t want dead spots in your grove for the cold winter winds to find its way through. Each shrub or tree serves a specific purpose in windbreak plantings. Shrubs are important to your windbreak for early snow capture and for filling in the lower portion of the windbreak as it matures. To get more information about shrub species selection check around the neighborhood and see which shrubs perform the best. Deciduous trees are used as a component in a windbreak to get some taller trees and further the distance at which the belt can provide protection from the wind. Conifers in the windbreak are ideal because they retain their leaves during the winter months. Keep in mind, no matter what type of shrubs, trees or conifers you want to use you should always check your soils type for that area.
