CORD leaders defend Lenku against ouster Wednesday, June 18th 2014 A group of leaders from the Maasai community have warned against threats by the National Assembly to impeach Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku. The leaders have said that Lenku should not be blamed for the rising cases of insecurity in the country. Members of the Narok County Assembly allied to CORD warned former Prime Minister Raila Odinga against the move by Opposition MPs to remove Lenku from office, saying they would reconsider their support for his (Raila’s) push for national dialogue. At least 15 MCAs attending a 2014/2015 Budget Consultative meeting in Nakuru County vowed to mobilise Narok residents to boycott the CORD rally slated for June 29. “We will not continue to support the Opposition if CORD MPs proceed with its plans to censure ole Lenku. An onslaught against Lenku is an attack against the Maasai community and CORD should forget about our support if it continues with its impeachment plans,” said Suswa Ward MCA Kipas Lengues. A section of CORD MPs have threatened to introduce censure Motion against Lenku for failure to pre-empt terror attacks and other forms of crime that have rocked the country in the recent past. But yesterday, the Speaker of the Narok Assembly Mr Nick Kamwaro said national security was a collective responsibility of the Government and that Lenku should not be sacrificed. “We take exception to the derogatory manner parliamentarians from both the Government and Opposition have been referring to the Interior Cabinet Secretary. Lenku may be a cook or chef but he should not be blamed for the insecurity in the country,” said Kamwaro. Lengues, who is also the ODM Narok branch chairman, said party leaders and members in the region would not allow CORD to hold their rally in Narok if MPs allied to the coalition continue to push for Lenku’s removal. Henry Siololo, another MCA elected on an ODM ticket, said they were embarrassed by comments made by the party MPs against Lenku. “CORD should forget about the Narok rally if its leaders continue to undermine one of our own, who has done nothing wrong. If they touch Lenku they should forget about our support,” said Siololo.
