CPR HORSE DEATH WATCH INVESTIGATION: #3 MAINTAIN, BELIEVE AND POSITION We are running a series of posts having a detailed look at the Racehorse DeathWatch report prepared by virtual thoroughbred activists the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses. CPR Claim: It is CPR’s position that the racing of underdeveloped horses in two year old racing (which often predisposes them to further injury if they do not break down at that age), ... are all welfare issues which contribute to a high number of deaths and injuries in racing Fact: There is a actually a substantial amount of independent scientific evidence that racing two year olds is actually associated with a longer racing career, such as the attached study of 110,000 racehorses published in 2012 in the Equine Veterinary Journal, which we have previously discussed on this page. CPR are well aware of this, hence the language they employ is we believe, we maintain and our position and you will see them using this type of language a lot these days, since their claims have come under considerable scrutiny and they have been struggling to provide any evidence to support them. In fact, it has even got to the stage now where they refuse to answer any questions at all about their claims or policies. It is interesting though in a report when CPR compare counts, not rates, across trainers, racetracks and states, that they neglect to mention that their own counts of the number of deaths in two year olds was actually less than the number of deaths for each age group from 3 to 7. Cleverly, they have prepared a report based entirely on counts, not rates, but obviously dont quote the counts that dont match their own campaigns. Because based on counts, and their report, two year olds and jumps racing states have less deaths! You can believe, maintain and have a position on anything without actually having to have evidence for it. People believe all sorts of things. UFOs. Chemical trails in the sky surpressing the public from uprising. Faked moon landings. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of people on social media who believe CPRs claims, but with your help we are spreading the word and getting the facts out there. onlinelibrary.wiley/doi/10.1111/j.2042-3306.2012.00651.x/abstract
