CPU’s Cabarles tops 2013 CHED REPUBLICA AWARD DR. JAIME C. CABARLES, JR., Dean of the College of Agriculture, Resources and Environmental Sciences of Central Philippine University was declared the National Winner of the 2013 CHED REPUBLICA AWARD (Outstanding Research and Publication Award), Natural Sciences and Agriculture category, May 20, 2014. The CHED REPUBICA Awards are offered biennially to recognize and reward outstanding research that leads to significant advances in priority disciplines and contributes to national development goals. Cabarles topped eleven (11) other finalists from University of the Philippines - Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University, Father Saturnino Urios University, Ateneo De Davao (3), University of Santo Tomas (2), De LaSalle University, University of the Philippines - Los Baños, and University of San Carlos. The distinguished panel of judges were Dr. William G. Padolina, former Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST); Dr. Angel C. Alcala, former Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources and former chairman of the Commission on Higher Education; Dr. Graciano P. Yumul, Jr., former undersecretary of the Department of Science and Technology; and, Dr. Romulo T. Aggangan, former Director of the Forestry and Environment Research Division, Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development of DOST. Dr. Cabarles research work was on “Production potentials of native chickens (gallus gallus domesticus L.) of Western Visayas, Philippines”. It is about poultry genetic resources diversity serving as reservoir of genes adaptable to local conditions, production, and resource utilization that are compatible with consumer preferences for meat and egg products. The observed variations in reproductive and growth performances of native chickens from the Western Visayas region showed their potentials for genetic improvement toward production.
