CR will offer classes at Arcata, McKinleyville high schools Eureka, South Fork high schools will also have CR classes College of the Redwoods will offer college classes at both Arcata and McKinleyville high schools this fall semester as a result of a new agreement between the college and the Northern Humboldt Union School District. The college will provide classes at both northern Humboldt high schools which will be open to high school students and well as any other CR student. High school students will receive both high school and college credit for the courses. These are called concurrent-enrollment classes for high school students. Arcata High will offer three CR classes and McKinleyville high will have two. Eureka High, which started offering CR classes on its campus last year, will have eight available. South Fork High in Southern Humboldt, which has also been offering CR classes for a number of years, will have one. “The concurrent-enrollment program can be advantageous to students because it allows them to get a head start on their post-secondary career while in high school,” said CR Vice President of Instruction and Student Development Keith Snow-Flamer. “High school students currently attending public or private high schools, or home school, can simultaneously enroll in a college class. The credits that students earn can be used for both a college degree or certificate and high school graduation requirements. “Participation in concurrent enrollment may ease the transition from high school to college by giving students a sense of what college academics are like,” Snow-Flamer added. “In addition, concurrent enrollment may be a cost-efficient way for students to accumulate college credits. Our hope is that this program will help high school students attain a degree or certificate shortly before or after their high school graduation.” Northern Union High School District Superintendent Chris Hartley is pleased that CR and his district are working together. “Utilizing multiple educational agencies to serve our community in a collaborative way is beneficial to everyone involved,” Hartley said. “By uniting our institutions we are giving our students access to college level courses which may otherwise not be possible.” >> Arcata High’s CR classes: Introduction to Astronomy, Thursdays, 3:45 to 7:50 p.m. Three units.
