CREW POSITIONS It’s that time of year again! We are opening the following production positions for The Mikado: Deputy Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager(s), Lighting Designer, Chief Electrician, Props Manager. If you filled a role for our last show, you are welcome to reapply for The Mikado. Whether or not you require a second interview will be determined on a case-by-case basis. The deadline for applications is Sunday 9th February. Please send your applications to [email protected], and I will contact you to arrange an interview! Below is an outline of the responsibilities associated with each role. Note that these are merely a guideline, as the actual remit and responsibility of a role may vary depending on the circumstances of the show. I have placed an asterisk (*) next to a role where it is important that applicants are existing members of the MUGSS Crew. If you are interested in a role, please dont be shy about applying! Many of these roles are perfectly suitable for new members of the society. Deputy Stage Manager (DSM) The Deputy Stage Manager is responsible for: - Cueing the show. - Maintaining communication with the crew through the Assistant Stage Manager, lighting desk operator and other appropriate persons during performances. - Creating a full document describing all technical aspects of the show and the point at which each occurs in the libretto. - Making sure that all cast members are aware (in adequate time) when they are required on stage during a performance. The Deputy Stage Manager should attend, where possible, all rehearsals after their appointment. * Assistant Stage Manager(s) (ASM) An Assistant Stage Manager is responsible for: - Assisting the Stage Manager in their duties. - Aiding in keeping the company quiet and under control during performances. - Aiding in communication between the Deputy Stage Manager and the stage crew. - Coordinating movement of props and set during a performance. - Following the libretto throughout the performance to aid in getting cast onto stage at the correct time. * Lighting Designer (LD) The Lighting Designer is responsible for: - Consulting with the Directors regarding his vision and requirements for lighting. - Creating a detailed proposal of how each scene will be lit including the types of lights, colours and direction of lighting. Any lighting changes that need to be tightly timed should be noted and included in the plan. This plan should be feasible both for the theatre in question and within the budget allocated. It should also be discussed with the Chief Electrician before the plan is finalised. - Drawing up a lighting plot in discussion with the Chief Electrician prior to the show. - Coordinating the plotting of lights with the Chief Electrician. - Watching the technical rehearsal to make sure of the design and note any changes that need to be made. The Lighting Designer should attend enough rehearsals to adequately know the show and do his job effectively. * Chief Electrician (LX) The Chief Electrician is responsible for: - Creating a lighting plan and plot with the Lighting Designer. - Implementing the plan proposed by the Lighting Designer. - Coordinating the rigging and focusing of lights. - Coordinating the plotting of lights with the Lighting Designer. - Organising the operation of the lighting desk during performances. * Props Manager The Properties Manager is responsible for: - Organising and/or overseeing the purchase, hire or construction of props requested by the Directors. - Ensuring props are with the correct actors at the correct times during each performance. - Organising the repair or replacement of props as necessary during show week.
