CW: suicide, depression Real talk. Suicide isnt selfish. Depression is an actual mental illness, not a way to describe your sad feelings. When you insult people who have everything going going for them because they suffer from depression, youre missing the point, and youre part of the problem. Of COURSE its messed up that a person can suffer when good things happen. Thats why its considered an ILLNESS. If they were reacting to a bad situation, we would just call it sad. Now comes the controversial part. Suicide isnt selfish. Selfish is when you think another person should suffer through intense torment and anguish that you cant possibly imagine, hanging in there for a cure that may or may not come because of a deplorable healthcare system (and even with the best healthcare IMAGINABLE, science doesnt really promise anything). Ok. So its important to be there for people who are struggling and make sure they have access to all available resources. But what they do with that is ultimately their decision. Im NOT advocating suicide. What Im getting at is (A) when a loved one ends their own life, its NOT your fault. (B) Its not selfish either. If we really want to prevent more tragedy, we need to shift the blame away from the victims and away from the supporters of the victims and on to the fact that this is an illness. Putting more effort into research, treatment, and accessible resources is the only way to effectively prevent this tragedy for a lot of people. As for Robin Williams, in a really dark way, it seems like such a relief to hear this news. Maybe relief is the wrong word, but something that marks the end of a struggle. Not to be morbid, but it hurts to recall someone openly struggling with a condition like this, and to think he was really just looking for some peace. I mean we say rest in peace right? In what better case is that applied? The world lost a hell of an actor and comic. He seemed to have a good heart and his loved ones lost a great man. Not a selfish man. I hope he found the peace he was looking for.
