California Friends: If you are concerned about the fate of education in the state of California please consider reading the information below and contacting the Governors office to request a veto of a bill that will repeal a 12 year old law that enables charter schools to operate in the Antelope Valley and other communities that have limited educational options. These charter schools are a critical resource for many local families, allowing them to choose better, safer public school learning opportunities to meet the unique needs of their kids. If you would like to see a sample letter in order to craft your own, please PM me and Ill forward one to you. --------------- Last week, California legislators passed SB1263 which is now sitting on Governor Brown’s desk waiting for his decision to veto it or not by September 30. We have but a small window of opportunity to stand united and let our voices be heard. If made law this bill would effectively repeal the current law that allows a charter school to place a single school site outside of its authorizing district under extenuating circumstances. It would also repeal the more than twelve year longstanding precedent that allows in-county non-classroom-based resource center facilities for independent study students. It is time for us to gather our legions of forces in opposition to this potentially devastating bill and respectfully ask the Governor to veto it. What can you do? 1. Call the Governor’s Constituent Affairs Office and register your opposition to SB1263 Call this number: 916-445-2841 (press 4 after the prompt to speak with a member of Governor Brown’s staff) Let the staff member know that you oppose SB1263 (Pavley) that it will have devastating consequences on your school and students, and respectfully request that the Governor VETO it. 2. Write Governor’s Office The Honorable Edmund G. Brown Governor, State of California State Capitol, Suite 1173 Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: SB 1263 (Pavley) - REQUEST FOR A VETO Include specific reasons that pertain to your school as to how this bill will be harmful to your students and family. And respectfully request that the Governor VETO it. Either fax your letter to the Governor’s Legislative Affairs office at: 916-558-3177 or Mail the original hard copy and three additional copies to the Governor’s office in Sacramento at the address above. 3. Here is another quick and easy way you can contact the Governor directly from his website: https://govnews.ca.gov/gov39mail/mail.php
