California Lifeguards: Are you looking for some Southern Hemisphere sun & Aussie Surf Lifesaving racing experience? In January of 2014 we have been invited by Life Saving Victoria to have a California Lifeguard Team travel to Victoria to compete in the 23rd Wieland Shield competition and educational exchange. The event is part of a longstanding exchange begun in 1965 between Lifesavers from the state of Victoria, Australia, and Lifeguards from California. Officially established by the LA County Lifeguard Association in 1967 the Wieland Shield was one of the first international lifesaving educational exchanges and the competition and the tour is surrounded by long standing traditions in both countries. We hope you would consider joining the 2014 California delegation. The elite surf lifesaving California Lifeguard Wieland Shield competition team will consist of 7 men and 4 women athletes, Managers, Coaches, and several Educational Officers. Each of the 11 elite California Lifeguard athlete representatives selected for the 2014 Wieland Shield will receive at a minimum a $750 stipend to contribute toward airfare cost. Team members will be responsible for additional fundraising and covering the cost of trip expenses beyond the stipend. Current non-stop LAX-Melbourne airfare cost is approximately $1700. Accommodation cost will be covered by Surf Lifesaving Victoria as the team will be staying in the dorm rooms of Surf Lifesaving Clubs while in Victoria. Dates of the official 23rd Wieland Shield team tour of Victoria are Friday Jan 3rd through Monday Jan 13th.
