Caliphate (from the Arabic خلافة, transl. Khilāfa) is the Islamic form of government representing the political unity and leadership of the Islamic world. The position of its head of state, the Caliph, is based on the notion of a successor to the political authority of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. According to the Sunnis, the caliph should ideally be a member of the tribe of Quraysh, elected by Muslims or their representatives; already for Shiites, it should be a magnet that descend directly from the Ahl al-Bayt, the family of the Prophet Muhammad.
