About Model United Nations: What are the benefits of participating in an MUN? There are many benefits. First and foremost is the value of the participation certificate. MUN is easily the best and the most challenging public speaking event. A participant is required to know about the country he/she is representing, need to have adequate general awareness and needs to engage in discussions which are extremely formal. What is MUN It all began with the World War II. When it broke despite the League of Nations existence, there was an urge to spread the Leagues spirit to future generations - to prevent future wars. Model League of Nations was established and after the League dissolved, Model United Nations became its successor. Many high schools and universities have their local MUN community or club. Each year, these clubs would join an MUN conference and compete with students from other clubs. A conference usually hosts three to tens UN bodies and specialized agencies discussing various themes, namely human rights, conflict resolutions, financial crisis, and legal document amendments. Today, there are more than 400 MUN conferences that take place in 35 different countries. Students not registered in any MUN club could also join the conference individually. For one to five days, MUN allows students to play a role as a foreign diplomat (a delegate), and therefore encountering a new perspective they must advocate through debates and negotiations. After a general debate, the delegates would create a legal document as a product of the conference. In a nutshell, MUN encourages young generation to not only explore international issues, but also to sharpen their public speaking, problem solving, consensus building, and writing skills.
