Call it beating a dead horse. Call it obsession. Call me crazy, I dont care. But I have weighed all of the arguments out there, and I cannot be convinced that the University of Georgia should be content with our lot. Admitting that your Universitys football programs ceiling is some plateau of 8 or 9 wins every year, a # 17 ranking, and a bowl game in Orlando against one of four opponents: Nebraska, Michigan St., Purdue, or Wisconsin, in my mind, is admitting defeat. I have heard that Georgia must keep Richt because there is no one else who will come to ATHENS to coach our team that can do a better job. Do we really believe that to be true? Are we really just ready to admit that all we can hope for is what weve had for the past 14 years? That we cant DARE to aspire to achieve what Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, and Florida have achieved multiple times over virtually the same time span? The answer is that that logic is ridiculous. I went through the Goff and Donnan years. I know what happened then. But to think the University of Georgia should allow itself to be trapped in the current cycle of mediocrity (and thats exactly what it is) simply because its not as bad as it could be or its better than we ever had it under Donnan or under Goff is completely defeatist. Im not saying our school has Alabamas, Notre Dames, or Michigans traditions. But we are the University of Georgia, damn it, and we pay our coach $5 million a year for more than what were getting. We owe it to ourselves to expect more than 8-5, 9-4, and 7-6 seasons that culminate in half-empty Gator Bowl losses each year. Have there been good years and good times under Richt? Yes. Good. But have we ever come close to achieving excellence? No. Its time for a change. I say this (no matter how ridiculous everyone will say I sound) because I KNOW in my heart and in my mind that I am right. I simply am correct. We deserve better. Any passionate Georgia fan who will not admit that is kidding themselves.
