Call me old fashioned :D I simply adore the old notices one finds on roots-web Often they entice me to research something familiar. This one struck my fancy. I am da keeper of ships in Port Alfred. :P In addition, divers over the years have found awesome artifacts along these banks, from shipwrecks. From research, I think it was one of these 3. Here is the notice. THE CHANTICLEER The following which came to hand yesterday will be read with great regret by all who admire and appreciate bold persevering enterprise. Port Frances 3rd March 1848. I am very sorry to inform you that the Chanticleer in crossing the bar of this river on the 1st inst struck on the western side and drifted on to the rocks at the end of the Western pier, where she now lies. Nearly the whole of the cargo is damaged but the most strenuous exertions are being made to recover as much of it as possible. The cause of this accident is to be attributed to the alterations which have taken place at the entrance of the river since the last heavy rains. The master, A.SEATON, showed much skill and made every exertion to save the vessels. Prompt assistance was rendered from the shore by Mr. W. COCKs boat and crew, but all to no purpose. A steam tug would have prevented this, as well as all the other accidents which have happened to vessels entering and clearing this place. The channel is at present narrow, but with not less than 8 feet depth at low water, quite sufficient to have admitted the vessel could she have been kept under command. PS Great fears are entertained for the vessel; appearances are decidedly against her. Cornelius COCK Saturday March 11 1848
