Calling All Mothers! An hour ago, yours truly was doing a neighbor a favor and walking her dog. Down a long, long hill along the river bluff, I called out to the woman head of me: Friendly dog, no worries! She turns around and is -- super duper pregnant. Me (hormonal memory immediately ranked up): Oh my! When is your due date?! Young Woman: Tomorrow. Me: OMIGOD. Tomorrow! Are you having contractions? Is this your first? YW: Yes-- thats why Im walking. . contractions started. And this is my second but my first vaginally - I hope. Now, I dont know about you, but when a complete stranger uses the word vaginally it is clear she means BUSINESS. This woman was in the lets cut to the chase sorta state. Me: Oh I hope so. Was your first a c-section? Of course, by now I am holding her arm. Young Woman (begins to cry a little): It was one of the worst experiences of my life. I cant even go into it. But I so, so dont want to suffer that again. I really want this to happen differently. Of coure, by now I am hugging her and inquiring about her support system, partner, and life in general. Nothing unusual -- a young woman, newly married, newly a mother and vulnerable. Me (feeling a little like I was going out on a limb, but, well, this is who I am): Listen, I am having a little party tonight and there will be a WHOLE bunch of women there whove had babies. Ill make sure that every single mama in that backyard sends you strength, energy, and love. Well radiate it! That limb? Friends, she grabbed it like a lifeline: Please! Will you really do that? Send me strength and hope? So I can do this. I can really do this? Me: I promise. And I am doing you one better, my dear young mother. That love, strength and energy request wont just be radiating from the backyard of Mound Street but from the expanse of FB. I feel it pouring to you right now, pulsing through the hearts of all the mamas reading this right now, feeling you.
