Can you dig it? Back in the day, when I was a teen ager, the word, dig in the phrase Can you dig it? basically meant, like, understand or sympathize with. Over the years, that phrase lost its popularity, and we just almost never hear it anymore, since the hippies are now the elderly and have mellowed out quite a bit. Now, I wasnt a hippie, but I came in on their coat tails, as far as age is concerned. Fortunately, the word, dig now has reverted back to the old standard. As a computer programmer for 40 years, I have had the opportunity to learn many different computer languages. Each time I picked up a new language manual, I did not just read it through from start to finish, and then close it - done! No, I read what I needed to learn, then wrote some programming code, tested it. Then, when I needed to do something that I wasnt sure how to do, I went back to the manual. I have adopted the term digging (or sometimes, getting my shovel dirty) to refer to learning the depths of the language, discovering something else each time. I have found this to be very effective on the job, much more than going to a 3-day class to learn the language and then, not being able to apply it at all because of the projects at hand. Im sure that Im a better programmer because I have not been afraid to go back and dig over and over again. There are other areas of life than just work, though. For myself, being a man, there are the roles of husband, father, son, household manager, financial manager, mechanic, appliance repairman, plumber, etc. There is much room for improvement in each one of these. There are many different sources of information for learning how to improve in these roles. One of the best sources for the first 5 of these is the Holy Bible. Yes, there are many examples of men setting good examples of these roles. Additionally, Jesus Himself taught on these. Just like the programming books, just picking the Bible up and reading it through once does not provide what you need for the moment 5 years later. However, unlike the programming books, the Bible is a living book. A person can read the same passage over and over and over again, and get something new out of it every time, as the Holy Spirit reveals it. A case in point was just shared with me at Powerhouse Church, Katy, by Pastor G.F. Watkins. He was teaching on how to live the blessed life by obeying God in bringing all the tithe into the storehouse (church) so there might be meat in my house. (Malachi 3:8-12) In a nutshell, God says to bring the 1st 10th of your gross income to the local church. Leviticus 27:30 says, And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lords: it is holy unto the Lord. Also, in Luke 1:35, when the archangel announced Jesus coming birth to Mary, he said, that holy thing which shall be born of thee, referring to Jesus - Gods son. In John 3:16 it says that God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son - Jesus - so that we could have eternal life, if we would just believe on Him. So, Jesus was Gods tithe, setting an example for all of us, by giving that holy thing. Since all things belong to God, anyway, and He is my provider, not my job, all the income that I receive comes from Him. Hes the One that gives me power to get wealth. Since He promised that if I would bring all the tithe into the storehouse, that He would pour out a blessing that I would not even be able to contain it, I have decided that I will absolutely do that and more! I would rather live on 90% that has been blessed than 100% that has been cursed. I relate that to gasoline for my car. I would rather have 9 gallons of good gasoline in the tank than 10 gallons of bad gasoline! Another revelation was that we are not to grieve over having to bring back to God what has always been His, not ours. When we grieve its because we have lost something that once belonged to us. But the tithe never belonged to us so, we are to willingly bring it to the storehouse, without grieving. I look forward to next Sunday at Powerhouse Church, when I fully expect to hear yet another nugget that I had not dug up, even in all my digging. #BringAllTheTitheIntoTheStorehouseAndBeBlessed
