Can you recognize if someone is showing signs of respiratory distress? It could happen anytime. These are the signs: • Rapid or slow breathing • Anxiety, restlessness, panicking • Heavy or shallow breathing • Unusual sounds when breathing like wheezing or gurgling • Discolouration of skin (pale or blue look) • Dizziness and vomiting • The casualty is clutching their throat and looks like they are gasping for air • Casualty complains that they are not taking in enough air • If due to an allergy, the casualty may have tightness of the chest and throat and may have hives or a rash • If due to a chest injury, there may be bleeding from an open wound around the chest or throat, sometimes causing a sucking sound.
