Canada has welcomed generations of newcomers to our shores to help us build a free, law-abiding and prosperous society. For 400 years, settlers and immigrants have contributed to the diversity and richness of our country, which is built on a proud history and a strong identity. Since 2006, Canada has welcomed over 1,500,000 proud new Canadians. Each year, we take a week in October to reflect on and celebrate the rights and responsibilities all Canadians citizens share. This year, thousands of people across Canada will take the Oath of Citizenship to become new Canadian citizens. Special citizenship-themed events will be held across the country. Learn more about our citizenship, what citizenship means to new Canadians, and what you can do to celebrate being Canadian. cic.gc.ca/english/celebrate/citweek.asp
