Canine Parvovirus: What you should know!! We at Wilson St Veterinary Clinic have learned that a young dog, that has recently used the Ancaster dog park, has been diagnosed with Canine Parvovirus. Parvovirus is a very serious and life threatening disease that generally affects puppies and juvenile dogs. The disease produces a severe and often bloody gastroenteritis that will quickly debilitate and not infrequently kill susceptible dogs. Affected dogs will secrete huge numbers of viral particles in feces, vomit and saliva. The virus is very hardy in the environment and is not readily killed by the cold. You can easily carry the virus home on your shoes and clothing. The disease is spread by oral contact with infected feces, vomit or diarrhea and signs generally develop in 3-7 days. You can best protect your dog by making sure their vaccines are up to date.
