Cardinal’s Song How could U or I or most US Ever know early on except by Fated chance to fall into A lap already awakened FAT CHANCE But now no one remains but me to blame Fess up for time long wasted Seems only poetry, (my apologies ,yes, I am biased,) Earthy moist Muscle unsleeved naked Daily plowing lifeless fields back Returns the lost to the wanted garden Seems only when steamy verses Tumble through bed sheeted night Bark to be let out Roll around, shout, rant, kiss Let moon truth shine bare assed Throw palm rounded heart words through stone windows Dance when the shatter frees children from indentured lives Seems like poetry not Thespian, minister, thérapeute clinique Was always the key No wonder in time those green vines withered I never stopped my running eyes To see not what but to whom they gazed To crack the Question Who? I swallowed them instead Leapt over the sapling, I-am clueless Marched long side the labeled crowds A functionary what Trying to whistle while I worked Caught up in profit rape Short shelf life commoditized If we missed real mentors Not Wall Street punks whispering Have I got a deal for you? Whatcha got for ME? Maybe distance from youth’s one-eyed thrust may do That wild tingling beast that dragged us long alone Wide trashed highways Unaware of what’s trash, what’s not Whether innocent or belligerent Soft shelled giver, hard boiled selfish taker From the harvest in my pants I can separate, now Now, the pieces aren’t so sharp Now, less noise, more quiet makes This winter’s work more bearable Now, I labor honest to the Cardinal’s passionate song © Jeff Cannon, 03/08/2014, 1:40 am, at desk
