Cavite celebrates 2014 National Disaster Consciousness Month Declared under Executive Order No. 137 on August 10, 1999, National Disaster Consciousness Month (NDCM) is being observed in the month of July which highlights the importance of community participation, establishing safe and resilient communities, and climate change adaptation. With this year’s theme “Kahandaan at Kaligtasan ng Pamayanan, Pundasyon ng Kaunlaran”, the celebration focuses on upholding disaster preparedness and awareness among stakeholders which is strongly believed as one of the factors toward achieving progress and development. Cavite Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (PDRRM) Officer and Provincial Government-Cavite Office of Public Safety (PG-COPS) Head Cecil Miranda led the launching ceremony of the NDCM at the Provincial Government of Cavite (PGC) held on June 30, 2014 during the flag raising ceremony of the PGC employees. A 30-second simultaneous sounding of siren signaled the start of the celebration, followed by a community prayer for the disaster victims and the releasing of pigeons by the Honorable Board Members which symbolize peace and life. Among the significant programs for this celebration is Barangay Ko Alerto, an information and education campaign in which Governor Jonvic Remulla goes to barangays and strongly advocates for disaster preparedness. Started on July 04, 2014, this campaign aims to raise the awareness of the barangay communities on the DRRM issues, prepare them especially those who are in hazard-prone areas, and enhance their capacities for self-protection and safety in times of disasters. In just a month, Barangay ko Alerto has reached thirty six (36) barangays in the towns of Noveleta, Kawit and Silang and is being implemented in other barangays of the province. More activities lined up for the NDCM were made possible because of the active coordination of the concerned Provincial Offices, City and Municipal Government units through the DRRM Officers, Barangay Coordinating Council, and Government and Non-Government Agencies. The Cavite PDRRM Council continuously urges every PGC employee, family and individual to stay informed, alert and prepared to help make Cavite a disaster-resilient province.(with reports from COPS)
