Celebrating New Jersey’s 350th year! In 1665, Philip Carteret, a cousin of proprietor George Carteret, became first governor of New Jersey-technically, East New Jersey, as West New Jersey was almost uninhabited at this time. Later, in 1672, representatives from five of the seven towns in East New Jersey-Newark, Elizabethtown,(present day Elizabeth), Woodbridge, Piscataqua, (present day Piscataway), and Bergen (present day Jersey City), elected to depose Philip and appoint James-son of George Carteret-as governor. Philip was a favorite of the Crown, however, and so ultimately regained his position. 350 Years of New Jersey History by Joseph Bilby
