Change of plans Read James 4:13-17 Encouragement for the day – “Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15 ESV I went to work at Truck Company 5 in Washington, DC once with high ambitions of getting a lot of things accomplished. I had to proof read a book that we have been working on, begin writing a new SOG, and finish all of the financial statements for the current year. These were not tasks that I needed to finish for the fire department but rather for the Fellowship of Christian Firefighters International. But before I could even write the daily devotion for the website I was reminded that I work for the District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department. The chief called me and told me that I was being ordered to the Training Academy for an all-day mid-level manager’s class. So often in life we get so busy with our own priorities. These priorities and projects aren’t necessarily bad, but they are not always in the will of God. James reminds us in chapter 4 to make sure that our priorities are part of God’s plan for our life. Life is short and we need to worry more about pleasing our Heavenly Father than worrying about our earthly plans. Those who want to know the will of God need to regularly read the Bible and earnestly pray that God himself would reveal His will to us. Imagine what we could accomplish for God if we would all abide in His will. Lord, help me to understand Your will for my life. Encouragement, an SOG for the fire service!!
