Chapter ## : The search of a forgotten friend. January 2009 was indeed relaxing. Christmas and New Years in Birmingham was humble but phenomenal. Despite alot of friends having left the U.K to resume their work - only a few remained with the offers given by corporations. Ben and his partner found a very elegant flat at the Birmingham Mailbox. While Vecky and I were the last to be residing in Jarratt Hall of Birmingham , Ben offered us a room for us to rent while he was searching for a bigger place. While I was busy baking a cake in the kitchen, Vecky picked up the phone and spoke with our friend Alice. It was odd that v didnt pass me the phone on the matter. What it turned out was a call for a reunion of friends to find our long lost Latvian classmate, Dina. So who was this Dina? Vecky said agitatedly as she approached the kitchen. I looked back at her as she stood by the kitchen door. Well, she was my first friend that I met in England. She left our college and never showed up to our graduation, why? That is weird. (sulk) Your friend Alice says she is calling all of you to visit Latvia and find this Dina. she said. But before I was going to answer, Becky interrupted me one more time. Dont go. Latvia is a poor country and if she wanted to find all of you she would have found all of you on facebook or that cantab directory. This was the first time I saw a strong glare of indifference towards her own home country and also for a friend no one in my circle of friends knew of since 2006. I began to think and analyze her subtle and partial hostile tone of voice before I replied to her. Becky knew how much everyone in the class loved her and it was a big mystery why she left on graduation day without saying anything. You are aware Dina was never my girlfriend, right? So please dont be mad at my friend or any of my friends. we are just worried for her. I replied calmly since I started to think she was explosively jealous again. I know! It is just. FORGET IT! Dont go! Its a waste of your time and money! Becky said in an angry tone. --- The following week, we took a train to London and had our meeting the Le Méridien Piccadilly lounge with Sonia, Alice, Kelly, Abdul, Stephane, Xavier, Josh, Elga, Denny, William, Lucie, and of course Becky. After the lovely time cherishing the fine champagne and wine given to us by Abdul, the reached the conclusion that was Dinas family was located 2 hours by train in the north of Latvia. So from what I gathered at the records. The town is called Valmiera, I contacted help with the town district to facilitate us a database of the residents that can give us a clue where Dina or her family are located. When we find her family , we will gift them these nice gifts we have for Dina and then well rent a nice venue to party with her. Everyone in the room seemed to agree at that moment. The only sulking and seemed bothered by everything was my friend Becky as she replied the following: You know, I am not going and I am not going to translate you because I do not speak Latvian. and Alice responded astounded Vecky , why?!? Pourqui? We were counting on you to help us. You are wasting your time looking for a person that does not want to be found and also there is nothing to do in Latvia except for guys dating stupid local girls! Everyone looked at her in confusion in attempting to understand her point of view as to why she was saying those things. In the time that we met Becky, her mood and perspective started to change. Sure, she was the youngest of our group and we hoped she learned a few things why our group acted like a family: Never leave a friend behind. After the argument between the caring British lady versus the angry Latvian/russian, I heard others saying that their schedules were too busy to fly to Riga and achieve this journey. Worried and anxious, I stood up and said that I would volunteer but I would go to Riga in July 2009, as that was my only available time. WHAT?!?!?! Becky annoyingly sulked. Ive been with the bank already for a while so I might as well use my vacation period. You can come with me and show me this beach you talked about...this Jurmala place...and the point is, Becky, we get this curiousity off our chests and still enjoy the rest of the summer there! I replied using an optimistic tone while trying to compromise the dispute Becky had with my friends. Becky...Guys, I really want to do this because Dina is my best friend. She was literally the first person I met at London Heathrow Airport and introduced me to all of you. Without her I probably would not have the friends I have today. I really think I should take a bit of my time to find her. Plus I can also call Lelde for help or use this new couch surf website to request assistance on how to get around the country. Becks, you are welcome to travel with me but if youre not coming along thats fine. Ill leave the month rent paid in advance and Ill catch to you a month after Im done learning where her familys located... Just by looking at her eyes of disgust and fury inside her said a lot of many differences we would have in our trembling friendship. Yet somehow I felt compelled to go this unknown country that left me marveled. Will the country look too soviet? Will it be full of danger? Racism? All I know is that the girls are probably just as beautiful as Dina and Becky. I concluded : So the capital of Latvia is Riga...and where else am I supposed to go? I asked. Alice smiled in gratitude of my volunteering and replied in relief: Valmiera. https://youtube/watch?v=HPMJPTaSnTU
