Check out the January cover of The Cattleman magazine. This is the branding iron for the Rocker b Ranch, located southwest of San Angelo, Texas. Originally the Bar S Ranch, and established in 1888, the Rocker b was purchased by Senator William Blakely, renamed, and eventually donated, in 1964, to the Dallas based Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. The Hospital is a world leader in the treatment of pediatric orthopedic conditions. Through generous donations, the Hospital provides care to children throughout Texas, free of charge, regardless of the family’s ability to pay. The Ranch is still owned by the Hospital today. The Rocker b runs Hereford bulls with Angus cows. They sell hunts for antelope, deer, quail, bobcat, coyote, feral hog, javelina and turkey during various hunting seasons. Pronghorn antelope found on the ranch are rumored to be a Mexican sub-species. Each spring and fall the Rocker b cowboys gather cattle for branding and doctoring. The ranch is so vast the cowboys camp in teepees during the 2-3 week branding and are fed all meals at the chuck wagon. They move camp as they work through 173,000 acres of cattle.
