The Hmong are an Asian ethnic group from the mountainous regions of China, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Being Hmong means being free. A farming people who lived off the land in the rolling hills of Laos, they had families, raised cattle and cultivated crops for food for centuries, without help from others. During the first and second Indochina Wars, France and the United States governments recruited thousands of Hmong people in Laos to fight against invading military forces from North Vietnam and communist insurgents, known as the Secret War, during the Vietnam War and the Laotian Civil War, The Hmong were recruited to join the military, and help the US fight the communist, to save their land. They joined with the understanding, they would keep their rich fertile land, if the United States could claim victory. If no victory, the Hmong people would have to leave their homeland. Hundreds of thousands of Hmong refugees were forced to flee to Thailand seeking political asylum, after the devastating Vietnamese War was over. Thousands of these refugees have resettled in Western countries since the late 1970s, mostly the United States, but also in Australia, France, French Guiana, Canada, and South America. Others have returned to Laos under United Nations-sponsored repatriation programs. Recent estimates show that there is about 200,000 Hmong people in the United States. China continues to have the largest population of Hmong people with an estimated 2 million. Many of the Hmong people have found a new home in the United States and have become involved in all aspects of American life.
