Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Belgrade-based Montenegro artist Gordana Tomic in Cadences of Color. The exhibition begins on July 5, 2014 and run until July 25, 2014. The opening reception takes place on the evening of Thursday July 10, at 6-8pm. About the Artist: Influenced by the natural beauty and fruitful history of Montenegro, where she was born, Gordana Tomic redirected her artistic expression from broadcast media to renderings in acrylics on canvas. In each work, one can see the impact of exotic cultures and the grounded wisdom imparted by her father and grandfather. Some pieces lean toward abstraction while others are engagingly sensual, portraits in passion. Through contrasts and colors, Tomic imparts the essence of the Mediterranean spirit in works that favor neoclassic styles. “For me, great artwork threatens time, space and mind – while retaining the beauty,” says Tomic. To this artist, the beauty of art is expressed in physics, emotions, and a life lived in the here-and-now. Through bold colors and often elemental, amorphous constructs, Tomic captures singular, meaningful moments that define her impression of the world. Her paintings expand our worldview, underscoring the ever-changing landscape of experiences in each of us. In uniting a diversity of techniques and exploring them in mixed media, Tomic demonstrates that art can have its own reality, untethered by rules or convention.
