Chemical Pollution As a chemist, I have always felt deeply - TopicsExpress

Chemical Pollution As a chemist, I have always felt deeply unpeaceful when thinking about the field of chemistry. Chemistry, from the early age of metal refining from the mineral, ceramic making, dye producing, extracting from the plants to the current organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, nuclear chemistry, molecular engineering chemistry... Science is an double-edged sword. I am not clear how much truth and false in the science here. Between the benefits and damages brought to humans by chemistry, I would think that the damages are much more than the other side. Our daily life can not do without chemistry. From shampoo, toothpaste, polyester clothes, toys, plastic stuff all around us, paper, pen, food additives, cars, all component in the car, chair, desk... You might ask how would paper have pollution? And how would wooden desk have pollution? You might not know that the paper has additive and the wooden desk has a layer of coating on it. When these supplies lose their application value, it’s when the pollution starts. Or you may say that the pollution starts when the production begins. From the experimental stage, large amount of solvents would get involved in the lab. We spend an enormous amount of time and energy taking the essence out of earth, producing and consuming. After that we return all the waste to the earth for the earth to recycle and digest. This is what we are doing. So you see, we have more and more white pollution. Do you see those sea beings died of white pollution? Do you see those piles and piles of electronic waste? So you see the working environment in which those people are trying to refine metal? Do you see that the algae are growing limitlessly? You must have seen the pollution resulted from the oil pipeline cracking. Too many things in our life are from the essence of the Mother earth. The above are just some of those which can be seen by our eyes. There are still too many which can not be seen. To stabilize the products, or to have certain properties, many additives are added to the products, for example antibiotics, surfactants, antioxidants and so on. These unseen small molecules are added to different products. Although, the amount of these small molecules are very low, less than 1% or even 1‰, the harm they brought could be huge. Their ultimate destination is the earth soil or water system. They are small, they more fine, however, their effect could be even more. If I tell you, there is antibiotic in the coating on your wall, do you know it? Think about this, how many medicines and pesticides are produced each year? Think about this, how many shampoo and detergents are produced each year? Think about this, how many antibiotics are produced each year? ... All of these will return to the earth as waste. The finer the article, more attention are needed. When these small molecules get into the water system, the sea beings would be effected. They have no where to hide. When the small molecules (gas waste for example) get into the air, not only we human beings are effected, the invisible beings will also be effected as well. We are indeed waste maker. We are the machine of transforming the earth essence to waste. All these are due to our five desires, greed and the mind that can not settle down. We are like the unstopping machine. We work ceaselessly. Day after day. Year after year. No thinking. Regardless of the future. Only the interest in the present. Unsurprisingly, I am still one of WE.
